Ample previous empirical evidence demonstrates that conditions of poverty and social inequality negatively affect society’s general development and economic growth. The Fondo de Aportaciones para la Infraestructura Social (FAIS) has stood out as one of the main mechanisms of the Mexican State to combat poverty. Faced with the hypothesis of FAIS’s insufficient effectiveness, this study proposes to analyze the impact of the different components of the FAIS on the poverty levels of the federative entities of Mexico. Using a model for panel data with biannual observations generated by instances of the Mexican government, the period between 2016 and 2022 was studied. The analysis shows that the resources allocated to water and sanitation and in urbanization projects significantly affect the rate of increase in the poverty level in Mexico’s states. The study results are relevant for economic agents interested in improving the living conditions of the Mexican population through the design, implementation, and monitoring of public policies aimed at combating poverty in Mexico
