SYNOPSIS Traditional Swahili verse shows the marked influence of Arabian prosodic forms. The following poem is illustrative of a popular verse‐pattern borrowed from Arabian models. The original manuscript was written in the Swahili‐Arabic script, from which the transliteration is made. The subject‐matter is especially fitting in an African context, though prayers in verse‐form for rain are included within the Arabian literary tradition
