SYNOPSIS This paper outlines the evidence given in Portuguese records on Nguni‐speaking people who were living in the coastal districts of the Transkei and Ciskei in the 16th and 17th centuries, and discusses the traditions which indicate that Thembu, Xhosa, and Pondomise were on the upper reaches of the Mzimvubu for an indefinite time before they came down to the coast
