SYNOPSIS At some time in their past it seems possible that the Bantu‐speaking peoples were in contact with an astronomically based system of calendrical time. This may have been a lunar system with an intercalary month at intervals. More definite is an association between the Pleiades and the beginning of the agricultural year. In the course of time the natural environment has dominated, and the link with the moon has grown less but not entirely disappeared. The paper gives lists of month names from Zambia which illustrate these points, and parallels are given from other areas
