An ardent reformer, known for the positions he adopted in the crisis of the Great Schism and the virulence of his personal quarrel with the archbishop of Reims Guy de Roye, Jean de Varennes was an extremely popular preacher in the later, eremitical years of his life (1392-1396?). He was also the little known author of two short vernacular works that anticipate Jean Gerson’s pastoral publications: L’Épître du Miroir de chrétienté and La Médecine de l’âme en l’article de la mort. The article analyzes his written works, which happily combine a studied style and efficiency; it then traces their tradition and reception, and proposes a first edition that paradoxically shows their perfect conformity with the most official teachings of the Church
