Rhodesian whites have claimed independence on the basis of a set of precedents in European social history in general and in British colonial history in particular. Their actions, they have insisted, have had more to do with these precedents and the promises suggested by them than with their own determination to hold the Africans in a position of political and economic subordination. While this argument might be regarded as self-serving, it nevertheless suggests another look at the place of the Rhodesian whites in the context of general European settlement patterns in modern history. Further, a review of population patterns among the settlers themselves might reveal characteristics which depart significantly from those cases in history that they have cited as precedents
