This article sets out a problem in comparative mythologies. The Negro, in his voyage from Africa to the Americas, brought with him his beliefs, his hopes and his mythologies. The crucible, however, of slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism has transformed these mythologies, as may be seen in the Haitian zombi, which is the Caribbean version of the African “living-dead.” Thus, in studying this creature from Haitian mythology one may see how the West Indian, the new man of the New World, remains linked with his motherland of Africa, and also how a primary mythology (African) has given rise to a secondary one (Haitian)
