Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image sizeRÉSUMÉCette étude préliminaire donne une nouvelle dimension à la compréhension de l'impérialisme européen en Afrique entre les deux guerres mondiales. La discussion repose sur le fait qu'après 1919 le transport civil aérien vint à jouer un rôle de plus en plus important dans la manière dont les décisions politiques européennes en Afrique se formèrent et furent exécutées. Les avions et les compagnies aériennes ouvraient une ère nouvelle pour des communications rapides et sûres ainsi qu'un avenir plein d'espoir pour les empires et le développement de l'Afrique. Ainsi, de 1919 à 1939, la Grande-Bretagne, la France, la Belgique, l'Allemagne, et une Afrique du Sud nationaliste devinrent de grandes rivales dans leur effort de faire entrer l'Afrique dans l'ère de l'aviation. La « lutte » qui s'ensuivit pour obtenir les droits et les routes ne fut guère différente de la « lutte » familière qui eut lieu quelques dizaines d'années auparavant au sujet des territoires. Néanmoins, cette rivalité donna une impulsion certaine au développement de l'aviation africaine
