How does earning money in an intentionally low-effort manner influence the way people organize and spend that money? Drawing on interviews with paid plasma donors, we develop the notion of “light money,” a type of money earned through what we call “light work.” We situate light money conceptually between “serious money” and “windfall money” and argue that it describes money earned through a wide range of activities that have not yet been characterized as similar. Light money is earned (a result of intention), easy (produced by light work), and extra (used for non-essential purchases). It helps those who possess it deal with money-related guilt as well as relational pressures associated with money. This is due to the money’s origins, the social context of donating, and the form that the money takes
