Over the past quarter century, the problem of so-called African systems of thought has stimulated much scholarly interest in secular and religious world-views in Africa (see especially Fortes and Diterlen 1965; Karp and Bird 1980). Indeed, the concern with possible differences in world-view and thus of rationality between the outside, usually European observer, and the people being studied has extended beyond Africa (Levi-Bruhl i975; EvansPritichard 1956; Levi-Strauss 1966; Lienhardt i96I; Horton 1973, 1974). From this more general concern over variations within Africa and between Africa and the West, social anthropologists (for the most part) have developed variations in their ways of looking at African systems of thought. This analysis focuses on four recent approaches to the study of African thought which may reveal much about ourselves as well
