Since the food crises of the 1970s and 1980s, Sahelian countries have been exploring various strategies that would enable them to manage the risk of food insecurity. However, their approaches often fail to integrate the complex determinants of food vulnerability and of malnutrition. That is why the IRD and the University of Ouagadougou set up, from 2001 to 2003, a set of coordinated rural field surveys in the East region of Burkina Faso, in order to explore the relationship between apparent spatialized risks, real food vulnerability, and the nutritional situation of each individual. The analyses have shown that the level of apparent food risk, which was measured according to the management constraints of the area, is far from meeting the real food availability and the nutritional condition of the people. Thus, the levels of malnutrition are the weakest in areas of maximal risk. This suggests that the households, confronted with serious and recurring cereal shortages, have developed adaptation and anticipation strategies, which have allowed them to partially erase the seasonal hazards
