Resumo
This article argues that anthropological attempts to define the category of the animate have been hampered by a residual Cartesian dualism that separates mind from matter and treats the animate as a composite of the two. It suggests an alternative approach, drawing on the work of Deleuze and Guattari, that understands the animate as a trajectory of becoming, a process of growth and movement in a relational field. The article explores the implications of this approach for understanding the nature of thought, arguing that thought is not confined to the human brain but is rather a property of the wider field of relations within which beings grow and develop. It concludes by suggesting that the concept of the animate, rethought along these lines, can provide a basis for a more ethical and ecologically responsible way of relating to the world.
