This article examines the distinction between the causal and comparative uses of comme in French, based on attested examples from oral and written corpora. Following a critical reassessment of the formal criteria traditionally considered (position, interrogation, negation, verbal tense, subject inversion), the analysis shows that none of these criteria provides a clear differentiation. The original contribution of this study is the demonstration of the central role of presupposition: causal interpretation requires the activation of a presuppositional framework, whereas comparative use relies on parallelism without presupposition. This approach offers a deeper understanding of the multifunctionality of comme and allows for a more refined description
