Resumo

This introduction to the special issue 'Double Signs and Intrasocietal Heterogeneity in Primitivist Tourism Encounters' argues that tourism-related primitivism is not simply a matter of how tourists imagine others to be primitive, but also a matter of how locals respond to and make use of such imaginings. The essays in this issue examine how the desire for and display of primitive authenticity are often internally contested and ambivalent. They show how such displays can be double signs, simultaneously indexing both cultural continuity and rupture, and how they can be used to negotiate local status hierarchies and power relations. The introduction suggests that attention to the intrasocietal heterogeneity of primitivist tourism encounters can help us to move beyond simplistic models of cultural invention and to develop a more nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics of cultural change in the context of globalization.
