Resumo
This article draws together a series of responses to the proposition that the concept of the Anthropocene offers a productive meeting place for the social and natural sciences. The authors share a sense that the Anthropocene is not merely a scientific concept, but one that is saturated with political, economic, social, and cultural meanings and consequences. The forum explores the Anthropocene as a site of contestation, focusing on the politics of the knowledge it produces and the forms of expertise that are being called upon to understand it. The authors examine the Anthropocene’s potential to open up new spaces for anthropological inquiry, while also considering the challenges it poses to established anthropological concepts and practices. They argue that anthropologists need to engage critically with the Anthropocene concept, attending to its diverse genealogies and to the ways in which it is being mobilized in different contexts.
