Richard White é professor emérito de história americana, Cátedra Margaret Byrne, da Universidade de Stanford (Califórnia - EUA). Ele notabilizou-se em 1991 quando publicou The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815, o qual causou expressivo impacto na historiografia estadunidense sobre a história dos povos indígenas e dos contatos coloniais. A sofisticada elaboração conceitual contida no livro forjou um novo arcabouço teórico para a interpretação das interações entre comunidades nativas e sociedades colonizadoras / expansionistas / imperiais. Esse referencial teórico passou a ser operado por historiadores em distintas eras históricas, regiões do globo terrestre e relações sociais, políticas, econômicas e culturais. O conceito também foi apropriado por estudiosos de outras disciplinas como a Crítica Literária, Antropologia, Arqueologia e Ciência Política. White foi duas vezes finalista do prêmio Pulitzer de História, em 1992 por The Middle Ground e em 2012 por Railroaded: the transcontinentals and the making of modern America. Nesta entrevista, realizada no ano em que The Middle Ground completa 30 anos de sua primeira edição, entre outras coisas, ele responde a perguntas sobre suas influências intelectuais no início da carreira, suas inspirações para elaborar a ferramenta conceitual do middle ground, seus projetos atuais e futuros e sobre as questões fundamentais que orientam suas pesquisas
