'Different investigators have coined different terms to succinctly describe [the paleomammalian brain]: visceral brain, vital brain, emotional brain and limbic system' (Curtis, Jacobson and Marcus Citation1972, 429). The three formations are also referred to in the literature as the neocortex, paleocortex and archicortex. 2. Like Allan Hobson (Citation1999, 207), I prefer to use the word 'nonconscious' instead of 'subconscious' or 'unconscious' to refer to those neurological processes which are not conscious processes, that is, of which the subject is not conscious. 3. Representing a command to one hemisphere, say the right, is done by visually presenting that command to the contralaterally connected left eye. 4. This occurred at a demonstration on the Kesas Tollway in Kuala Lumpur during Reformasi. One of the demonstrators who was present reported to me that the canister was aimed at the car of Anwar Ibrahim's wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, but it was her bodyguard who took the brunt of the impact. 5. A Malaysian NGO that promotes human rights. 6. In a personal communication, Elizabeth Wong recollects her arrest thus: 'All I said to the cops was, "What are you doing with him? Let him go!" I was first arrested near Fahmi. Then they released me when the police were told I was from Hakam. Then later, under the shade of a tree near the public toilets, I was arrested again while the others around me were ignored. They told me, "Come with us". I said, "What for?" They said, "Just come". When I refused, they carried me away.' 7. Non‐government Malaysian news website, Malaysiakini.com, reported: 'When met, Kuala Lumpur police chief Mustafa Abdullah defended the use of the water cannon, saying that was [the] most effective way for a quick dispersal of the crowd. He also said that he was only expecting a memorandum handover from the organisers ... "Things got out of control when the crowd sat down to protest and refused to move even after we told them to disperse".' (Yap, M. C., Malaysiakini.com 28 February 2004). 8. No charges were eventually laid
