This analysis of Northern Abelam political organization has particular reference to the village of Kalabu and its neighbours in 1939–1940. An outline is given of the distribution and size of villages, the language, economy, and major rituals. The description of village organization covers land ownership, principles of recruitment of members to the village, hamlet organization, qualifications for leadership and the situations in which this is exercised. Clan organization is analyzed, showing fluidity of affiliation, the range of factors which determine this and their political implications. Lastly, the scale of political organization is discussed in terms of the nature and range of intervillage relations
