This is a brief overview of some very substantial areas of social scientific research, theory and methodology. There are three main divisions in the paper. The first provides a brief analysis of social scientific activity reflecting orientations toward the social world. Only two contributors to social scientific thought are considered at any length, for specific reasons: the difference in orientations of Marx and Weber, in terms of the social and cultural milieux of their times, still has relevance, in fact great significance, for considering the role of the social scientist in society. This significance is discussed more particularly in the second section, concerned with social action definition, using analytical concepts and social‐historical examples relevant to the contemporary situation. Some dimensions of social action are posited and elaborated within the framework of the ‘OTI’ formula (output, throughput, input). The third stage represents development of a constructed type of social action as structure and process. Conceptualization in this latter stage is somewhat more analytical than in the preceding sections, and there is no systematic attempt to develop propositions and relationships between and within discrete sections of the type
