Studies of Korean nationalism have not only been less researched but they have also been predominantly nationalistic and moralistic. Authors have tended to assume an already present nationalism ever since the late-nineteenth century. They have omitted analysis of the mechanism of the emergence of Korean nationalism and so have merely substantiated the concept. This tendency is attributed both to the lack of methodological sophistication - most of them apply the concept of nationalism teleologically and without theoretical rigour - and also to the ideology of the authors themselves. The aim of this article is to expose some of the current problems recognized in this area through the examination of works by selected authors
