Bark canoes

Bark canoes are characterised by their envelope, which consists of a sheet, or sometimes several sheets of bark. The bark used is of different thicknesses depending on the available tree species and its own specific rigidity. These parameters necessitate the insertion of a number of elements to reinforce the shape of the canoe and stabilise the upper opening. The implementation of folds on the sides and ends of the canoe avoids the use of a system for ensuring watertightness, but few canoes are of this type (such canoes are found above all in Mozambique and in the Amazonia/Guyana region). The great majority of bark canoes display ends that are pressed together and sealed by a lashing (short ropes) or sewing (long ropes). The sewing techniques used on Australian canoes demonstrate exceptional diversity, and are sometimes characterised by remarkable complexity. Bark canoes are therefore typically shell-first constructions, resulting from highly developed concepts and fundamentally dependent on the thickness of the bark and its mechanical characteristics
