This article introduces a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies. It provides a brief account of how the shooting stopped, reflects on the quietist nature of much recent academic commentary on the region, explains the contents of the special issue, and considers three relatively benign prognoses about the future of ethnic conflict and cooperation in the region
