Many professionals and laypersons share the view that the lives of postoperative male transsexuals are substantially happier because their anatomy is much more, if not entirely, consonant with their psychic state as a result of sex‐reconstruction surgery. They also tend to believe that marriage will then be much more likely for such transsexuals since they will have no difficulty in attracting heterosexual males. Thus, these individuals will no longer be regarded as sexual deviants. This study has found that such views are questionable for various reasons: the courts disagree about the sex role of such transsexuals; some attract bisexual rather than heterosexual males as mates; others experience serious dissatisfaction with the results of this irreversible surgery; and those desiring to adopt children very likely have developed unrealistic expectations. At present the sex role of the postoperative male transsexual appears to remain a deviant one for these and other reasons, despite the anatomical changes produced by surgery
