The racial identity (black vs. white) and psychiatric status (ex‐patient vs. "normal") of confederates were manipulated in job interviews with a random sample of employers in a medium‐sized southern city. Based on ratings derived from confederates' descriptions of these interviews, employers' reactions to applicants with a psychiatric record were significantly more negative than to those with no record of hospitalization
