The concept of deviance is obscured because of the confusion between two types of definitions, one that describes the boundaries in general terms, and the other that cites examples. Of the former, there is little dispute. But the latter involves changes over time, within different societies, the degree of negative reaction invoked, and other factors. For the latter type of definition, the societal reaction approach is said to be not only useful, but also indispensable. It is this that gives deviance its polymorphous character
