Cummian’s letter De controversia paschali recounts the lead up to, and subsequent fallout from, a gathering of ecclesiasts who met to deliberate on the dating of Easter at an unidentified place called Mag Léne. While initially united in the decision to embrace the system of Easter prevalent in Rome, this unity was subsequently sundered by an individual dubbed a paries dealbatus (‘whited wall’) by Cummian. It will be argued in what follows that this great disruptor should be identified as Cummeneus Albus (abbot of Iona, 657-69), and the implications of this suggestion for the standard chronology of events will be considered
