Avant-gardiste, auteur du roman expérimental Bebuquin (1912), Carl Einstein était surtout théoricien de l’art. Il fit découvrir en Allemagne l’art primitif africain. Son premier livre s’intitule Negerplastik (1915, trad. L’art nègre). Suivirent d’autres essais dans le même domaine : Afrikanische Plastik, Negerlieder, Afrikanische Legenden, Negermythen, parmi presque une centaine d’articles et recensions touchant à l’art et aux artistes de son temps et débordant sur la création littéraire.
