Writing myself into teaching
Reflective journals and the formation of a Muslim teacher identity

Reflective writing is widely recognised for its role in supporting pedagogical development and professional identity formation (Bolton, 2018). However, limited attention has been given to how early-career teachers from global majority backgrounds engage with reflective writing as a means of negotiating personal and professional identities. This paper examines reflective writing as a site of identity work through the lens of my experience as a Muslim trainee teacher in the Teach First programme. Drawing on selected journal entries written during training and shared with institutional mentors, the paper explores how reflective writing enabled critical engagement with tensions between personal identity and institutional expectations, as well as broader questions of belonging and representation within the school context. The entries reveal how reflection moved fluidly between pedagogical concerns and identity-related issues, offering a space for processing challenges, asserting agency, and negotiating professional subjectivities. This paper contributes to discussions on reflective practice by demonstrating its role beyond pedagogical development as a means through which early-career teachers can navigate identity, negotiate institutional norms, and make sense of their place within the profession
