This article is a report of research updating the work of E. Digby Baltzell (1953) in which the Social Register was shown to be an index of the social upper class. Baltzell, and later Domhoff (1967) and Broad (1986, 1995), identified several practices used by the upper class to consolidate upper class repute and support class cohesion, using the register. Continuity of register listing and certain naming practices, such as numerical serialization and recombinant appellation, are here examined in the 1977 and 1995 Social Register. The findings conclude that these practices continue to be used, indicating reaffirmation by the social upper class that they remain interested in continuity of lineage
