Despite significant progress in knowing what constitutes effective teaching, the development of learning standards for PreK-12 physical education, the creation of various evidence-based curriculum and instruction models, and the emergence of a wide array of digital technologies (among others), physical education’s marginalized status remains. This special feature includes an introduction to the purpose and significance of state policy, why periodic updates to the U.S. state policy landscape are essential to determining national trends, the role of the newly developed State of the States Policy Report in shaping state-level advocacy efforts, and how the report aligns with national movements to improve the quantity, quality, and equity of physical education and physical activity across the United States
