Epistula ecclesiae Smyrnensis de passione Polycarpi (BHL 6870). Kritische Präliminaredition The „Epistula ecclesiae Smyrnensis de passione Polycarpi” is a literary adaption of the so-called Pionius-recension of the Martyrium Polycarpi (third century). On the grounds of the translation-technique applied and the underlying ideology of martyrdom it can be dated to the first half of the fifth century. By now, we know eleven complete and eleven incomplete manuscript witnesses for this text which represent two distinct hyparchetypes of the transmission, α and β. Whereas most of the complete witnesses depend on the inferior α, the superior β-text is completely represented only by the very negligently written codex S (Paris. Lat. 17625). The textual decisions made in the critical edition thus have to remain preliminary to a certain extent, especially where a β-reading cannot be verified by additional testimony of the partial version also dependent on β
