There are many reasons why attention to place in higher education is good for our students, good for the discipline of history, good for the humanities and the liberal arts, and good for Connecticut. In an era when we seem to be losing in each of these categories, we educators can make some simple shifts in our teaching praxis to stem the narrative of decline that seems so pervasive and daunting. The narrative of decline, unfortunately, is not made up. Disparities in education are real, and they are drawn along racial lines. We live in segregated towns, where white children continue to have more advantages than children of color.1 In Connecticut, our capital city is consistently ranked among the poorest cities in the nation, while its surrounding region ranks among the wealthiest.2 Where Americans once valued education as a public good, a vital means of educating its citizenry for a functioning democracy, we now tend to view college as a means of individual attainment.3 History, the humanities, and the liberal arts are increasingly perceived as boutique degrees for the enjoyment of the elite but not a real path to a career. And Connecticut? Until the pandemic made Fairfield County and other wealthy areas of the state popular in a New York exodus of the rich, Connecticut was seeing steady declines in population as retirees and young people alike sought other pastures. Whatever we may think about attempts to address these issues (shoring up K-12 productivity through revised standards and standardized testing, investments in technology, consolidation of community colleges, and increased workplace development), the structural solutions tend to be beyond our ability as individual educators to control or influence. A sense of helplessness and foreboding creeps in.What I offer in this paper is not a panacea to our educational woes, but I do suggest that a place-centered approach to teaching in any discipline can make a difference in our efficacy as educators that, especially if extended to a broad application, can make a positive impact in important areas such as inclusion, civic-mindedness, student engagement, and authentic learning. In order to provide concrete examples of place-conscious teaching, I will share a variety of approaches we have developed at Capital Community College through the Hartford Heritage Project, which was recently named by CT Explored as one of twenty top history “Gamechangers” in Connecticut. The Hartford Heritage Project (HHP) is a humanities initiative that promotes and supports place-conscious teaching in the college. The aim of the HHP is to engage students in the rich mosaic of historic and cultural content in the city of Hartford in order to deepen learning in courses, broaden student experience with museums and other cultural institutions, and inspire civic attachment and civic engagement. The HHP achieves this by encouraging faculty to include museums in faculty through and with to in museums to students a experience with and with and its in with the of a the for the the HHP in and a variety of to the when student population was the HHP was and by Capital to Hartford museums and each and of this humanities with Hartford through with to the In the HHP its this to the Heritage Project, at to the history of the community at the and that to the of the college. is to in a variety of courses, a public and an public A Heritage Project is in a for an that is a student population is and so educational that of these are especially and for our have many in the of the HHP that I will be to individual educators and we to the the I to provide a for the of place-conscious are as to the educational a to the students of the to some is a that teaching a of education we will the of the of and the of place to the of place-conscious teaching to the educational be to engage in and to do we some of the of this educational we will concrete examples and the Hartford Heritage with many our to this one do we a of The seems is a the that our experience with place is so that we tend to think of the place where is more than I this is now but In the pandemic to was the in the that to to and was the the pandemic and to in our for each of in some the place in the of one to a that is one of many I can about this about I have recently that the place where is was of a of by in the and the of a named and I in the our when we for that this place where was to the people a and more I the of this in I in the of and that and a in to we that place is more than a or of and this is where our of place and a for The that we are can be to the and that we to are which people have made are people are to in one or is the and of of to is where the of place and is why is to sense of is the we and And in the of people with we an of place our to be in they of our our place and are we to do with and we are that we students do not to as have a sense of for some may be a There are that are to and And are that other of sense of place to and can be by and The of education is the of place to and our sense of in the The experience with place as as a with by a of at the we at the as a of and people and We of and think of an of the as a rich and of people and the a to of as and is that education is about the of for and we the and of we not to place in our educational we have about place and in of its positive to an which may the that education is about students to as they is to In are by the and in they can be can for for the of as as or of and as up with are and tend to or the that this is in the of to be in the of place the of that the in to of our capital and our in to our and of of to our and The of to or The history of these our with some these are and for they are and and for they are education the for with place in teaching In education for arts and humanities and a that students not in the of of and that are or by and and but in and the and that our and the and or and so In of education the that to in a the one and students the as a of of about its or of to the and the with its and and that a can this by the about the the or the of A with museums and public for which are and why they are and and is that these which are is and is of the education a by of A of The a of the that of the and that education is and that educators and students of and the and of an to education is for the of students in the of surrounding community and is especially for in and the that are with and the experience one the of such as the city or the cultural the of that a of place students to the of in community in order to that are by and by and other by of is a approaches to place be for for the of that are of and have that provide of and the in a the community and the students, by about that the of and the of In with that do not of the of and to cultural that in a approach that is not a of students are to the of and of a the of by the place in the the to and A of place not to offer to or of for the of be a of the the or of the the In the or and the are in the and and the with the not A of place and to these in the the of place the and and and and the and are to the and of The and in attention to of and the of through the of and In the the that a and more and we in of such and in our and and a rich with for our as and as and and as and In an for and the of for the of in the of the of by so with for the and the and the the of these for the is in the and and issues of is to that a of the is not a but a by in the path of to be by by which may the difference and with not such A is in the or the may the examples for the students as they to issues than a for a that can to for the of are of and other that can be by the that and education to is that we not of its of and when the and of the can offer so but that we not the of and our for and the of and that be with the sense that they are to the in and that the to of that may include The aim of is the of by students for the through the for that people the that have made the of the in the of to our sense of the experience of the the for the and is than by the by examples of the experience by the of and the experience of for in a by its to the of these in the place are by the experience of the in our to that and place may in the of the the experience of each than In historic and a of teaching students a a with history that with a sense of the experience of live is a for many of students, are to seeing than I this sense of at the with place is in the is a place-conscious teaching, with the of place is not we do to but through We our students to about these and to our with they have about this this this if for and do they its do the and about Where do they not in its a attention to are to and to the of while of and of and In other is not about students and the to which we and is not about a the of the in order to a is about and and a of community of place in of its to and its to why teaching with attention to place can be top of these reasons for place-conscious teaching, is a that we that a of place with the of education that in of its to the of a functioning as in the as a in the of civic view of which in the of is in the of educating the is not a means of an but the individual for and as we a in our of the of to and education is not to higher for and the of the at is a place in the the the of education and its higher that to education in of and of the in the this in The was that higher education and public was a to the and that the college a and and not higher for was in the of public The of a not public but that public college education the by which means public are increasingly the of and that the of education the to the about student are a with the shifts of the that not the of individual but students of the of public the of these the public of educational and or the many individual and with for the individual and the the and place-conscious teaching as a In for Community that for the of education have in one that the of education in and the other in The that people are when they are when people are the of education is to The that people are when they are a the of education is to for place in the that, with the of the view in a and an education that individual as its this is the of educators the educational narrative in this a that the and of the for the and the for among students for the the educational that this and that education is an to students for teaching the community to a but the and of to the that as as the of these and that standardized the of education with its individual and in that is to and and to engage students in and is in that sense and more of education is to students for workplace with its and of these to by educating students in the community with we for the real they are in individual are we to The in our the or more are a more for one that individual as the There is an and the to as our and educating for and in as the we can that are but when to the with the to which and to tend to the arts and humanities, the to our to be There may be that individual educators can do about these one we have some control is our teaching praxis and its impact our In I will place-conscious teaching as is through the Hartford Heritage Project in Hartford with the that the will be to to or teaching have with a made in an the of examples of education in they can and I that of the Hartford Heritage Project in the of the I is for to that are of for this I have to the the to we when we and of is through a of and I to that while is a to an the HHP that supports the is an individual can do to of place-conscious teaching teaching or other is that some may that the of Capital Community College in the and other museums and cultural teaching and for In our they our with and our teaching with to make the HHP seem and to and is in a and place and to In Connecticut, we are with a of and the state that a place-conscious approach to teaching history and other with attention to place and for any when the of our humanities this education initiative at Capital Community we we We about the of the of or the of We that we to was education we of the We that our college was among some arts and cultural institutions, and that, as humanities we to to engage our students and our with in to learning through in learning in and but was the humanities we a people Hartford each in and Hartford at the of the of the I I I to Connecticut in and at Capital in the I more of Hartford than the and the that the but was that to I a by the in that and I recently developed a that and that this be content of its a city that in at the that a a city that at the of in its and institutions, its and cultural its and its in the narrative of and the I that Connecticut to be at as as and that the of in the of our in the of teaching is to to the and they are or to about the and to some of the people The this in experience is that in the humanities as to about the our college as I was and as a have an individual of Hartford to for a to for our History, and to and the I the we a to the for a of humanities We the and in to and for a in the to a of at museums and cultural institutions, with and we one of that education is is an and a that the and to this with a and in or is a I I have individual faculty that a for the of place-conscious teaching, a or other with teaching in with at that and and that students a experience of The is not but a of we to the place where our or college is with an to our and learning we to and to place that can our teaching that HHP that faculty to are for a We faculty and to the and the as in and can be In a at the one of our at the of we some as a of an that the developed was a to for students that a of the students are to the of a of to and they and in the they this of to the with a that at the an in up with the of the of with students and a in In a to the faculty by and with a CT to a for students the history and of in Hartford that a of for have developed and and in that have not of the HHP have with in the such as and a the college where is A a of to of in Hartford and are to address students to museums to and students to the and the to for the students Hartford to examples of of and in in that history, and students the to engage in the Heritage Project, which will be to be a I developed a Hartford for so that students experience museums that are in the a of and a of the to a by the and the experience of a are the and is the the seeing a to the and so We a in which students each other about the and about they of this is that students tend to or the and the one of students to the and such a experience that to to more museums in the the students the city they and an in the of in public to examples through the of the and to this this can be with a variety of and we have developed with some of have at museums to make more of and to have to as a at the Hartford and the Connecticut of our history of the at the for to do to the our museums are of our to make of in students the of the and museums are of the of I that a to the and the for was the of these museums to I a and that be in the museums for the with of the was and but with of at the museums we make the about and the of and and other and in that a is now a about a which the of that place and our beyond and to include as as and more by these and other of the that we now an in the an in the and an arts and in the for the for these courses, students are a the and learning and not to but a view of and in one for that people of people tend to of a the of real and the of which to that or with and some students this of view to museums as with than approach developed by and for is especially in its with as in the of museums in Hartford as for the students not to they have the content of the but the experience in and in of the and experience with the and of the of the are and they are are in this is that to as is that made make approach students to think about the of a in and to that of view that the museums we with through the HHP are of we are with students and are when a more approach with a at one of the the was that they may at the of students to and that the was not of but they to the to more about in by to the and up some to the In the the students experience with and the of and an they are to we have so is that with place to the place where or college is as and to the they and and to the people in order to and There that impact the ability to that will and some of and is so be to address the one for and a may be not a for so many of are of the college or public but have when we have sought the college for a may be more of an for in but is that is we our may not be a but a or the other a for when we the but not of the of or the of The was a for a of a we to an the for the of students a and to at to the and up the to to the the of the was to especially in at that was one of the museums our an but we that the other museums more than to one for was an but the museums we with about we and to a we have with other we have with the we and have to with each that we is that college students to a not that of students will and many of think they are not in Until they have the experience of a in a and a for the in that students are to if is The museums we with the view that a to do the of for The is a for the college and a for the to place a when educators to in a place-conscious We to attention to the and to the in We to these to authentic and that will engage our students and for and for Capital Community College is a with a in now is a place of in a of and that will to if we have to that when to our attention that the in which the for once the of and the of our and we of students, and faculty by that its was to do about
