Intersecting digital literacies and multilingual identity in online gaming space
A semiotic assemblage perspective

This case study adds to research on multilinguals’ digital literacies and identities construction by exploring a) what semiotic repertoires were assembled as Toutou, the case study subject, engaged in digital literacies in online gaming space and b) how Toutou’s semiotic assemblages in online gaming space impacted his multilingual identities. This study finds that dynamic semiotic resources enabled his participation in the global gaming community; however, Toutou was also constrained by semiotic resources in his multilingual language practices and identity construction. Based on translanguaging and semiotic assemblages, we argue for a distributed view of Toutou’s online gaming experience in that his digital literacies and multilingual identities are distributed across a number of semiotic resources; it is the relations and entanglements between human and nonhuman that generated forces for the materialization of Toutou’s meaning making in the online gaming space. Pedagogical implications are discussed along with possible future research directions
