Resumo
This article examines the role of memetic storytelling in constituting and maintaining cryptocurrency communities. It argues that ‘hodling’, a practice of accumulating and holding onto cryptocurrency despite market volatility, is sustained by a complex interplay of digital folklore, performative online behaviours, and speculative imaginaries of future wealth. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in online cryptocurrency forums, the article analyses how memes, in-jokes, and shared narratives function as forms of social cohesion and collective identity formation within these communities. It explores how these memetic narratives contribute to a sense of shared purpose and resilience in the face of external criticism and market fluctuations. The article also considers the broader implications of this phenomenon for understanding the dynamics of online communities, the cultural impact of digital technologies, and the evolving nature of financial markets.
