These interpretive literature on the 1984–5 British miners' strike is described and evaluated under the following headings: the origins of the strike, NUM strategy and tactics, 'Scargillism', the Nottinghamshire question, the significance of the coalfield women's movements and the outcome of the strike. It is argued against prevalent interpretations that the strike was centrally a dispute about managerial authority; this related strongly to the tradition of 'pit politics' (as opposed to 'mineworkers' politics' in British mining. These concepts also clarify the nature of national leadership, tactics and internal divisions exhibited during the strike
