This paper develops a discussion of Habermas's Postmetaphysical Thinkingin order to raise the question of how Kantian Philosophy might be historicized. This question is central to Habermas's enterprise, as he regards post-Kantian philosophy as a series of failed attempts to overcome a set of oppositions bequeathed to modern thought by Kant's (incomplete) supersession of traditional metaphysics. Hebermas proposes to make good this deficit in the Kantian dialecti through his own theory of communicative action. In discussing Habermas's strategy in this regard I do not attempt to debunk it but rather to describe it, as an instanceof the Kantian dialectic. This is as a prelude to outlining a different way of approaching the dialectic as an object of historical description. For this alternative approach the dialectic has the character of an intellectual or spiritual discipline. It is treated as a practice of intellectual conduct through which certain individuals acquire the capacity and standing to conduct themselves as intellectuals
