Pour rendre hommage à l’ouvrage qu’Hubert Teyssandier a consacré au gothique, et en particulier à Mary Shelley et Charles Robert Maturin, cet article se propose d’analyser la réécriture intertextuelle du roman de Maturin publiée par Sarah Perry en 2018. Le Melmoth de Perry reprend en effet les tropes gothiques de la hantise, de l’apparition/disparition, de la persécution religieuse sous Mary Tudor. Mais c’est pour mieux basculer vers le vingtième siècle et sa violence, notamment lors du génocide arménien. La séduction de Prague sous la neige, de l’opéra, prélude à l’apparition d’une Melmoth au féminin, entre Méduse et Ange de l’Histoire, qui épie les protagonistes et leur offre la tentation d’échapper à l’insupportable.
