Surf tourism is becoming increasingly important in several tourism destinations, fostering a distinct culture tied to the sport. Despite the important role of culture in attracting visitors, earlier studies often lack contextualization and fail to differentiate or situate surf culture within specific destinations. Understanding what characterises this culture is relevant to preserve it, promoting its appropriate development, and increasing surf tourism destinations’ competitiveness. This study aims to fill this research gap, helping to enhance understanding of surf culture in Peniche, identifying and characterizing its dimensions, and exploring how the local surf community perceives its culture. Structured interviews were conducted in Peniche, a surf tourism destination in Portugal, with surfers (both local surfers and surfing tourists) with considerable surfing experience to characterise the dimensions of surf culture. Data were analysed through content analysis. The results enabled the identification of five surf culture dimensions – specific values, knowledge, behaviours, symbols, and beliefs related to surf, as well as relevant specific aspects related to all these dimensions. Results help clarify the essence of surf culture in Peniche and identify aspects that support preserving and promoting it. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed, particularly in improving surf tourism destinations through surf culture and presenting a ‘Surf culture dimensions model’ with guidelines for destination managers.
