How are stereotypes of the Middle East as a dangerous, barren place being reconfigured to sell Jordan as an international tourist destination? In analyzing Jordan's newly refurbished image, I examine photographs found in tourist brochures, guidebooks, travel volumes, and coffee‐table books. I then compare the content of these images with that of orientalist paintings and conclude that while the most sensitive subjects (i.e., harem and mosque) have been dropped, many “exotic” elements are still being utilized. This is due to their familiarity, hence marketability, to Western audiences and despite Jordanians’ best efforts to redress the false impressions thereby conveyed
