In the form of a collage I juxtapose my experience of mask‐making with various interpretations of the nature and meaning of masks in order to explore the questions of whether masks can have meaning for those outside the culture of origin and whether encountering cultural artifacts like masks can enhance our own self‐understanding. I conclude, with some interpreters of masks, that the answer to these questions is in the affirmative, at least as a possibility
