This work investigates emerging technologies for sustainability education. We explore the design and implementation of Waste Genie, a web application designed to promote waste management learning. Waste Genie harnesses the synergies of formal and informal learning approaches, offering an interactive environment for users to engage with people in the community and the educational sustainability content. Two user studies were conducted to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the system. Usage data and survey feedback were collected to unveil insights about Waste Genie's usability. Hidden Markov models were generated to analyze the participants' sequential patterns and behaviors. The results suggested that the hybrid learning mode enhanced students' engagement and participation in contributing to and consuming the domain knowledge. The interactive quiz feature, supported by immediate feedback, appeared to be an effective tool for learning. The post-study survey showed that the Waste Genie is user-friendly and revealed a positive impact on users' awareness of waste management, showing the potential of our educational technology to help people foster sustainability awareness and sustainable practices
