The semantic change of ἀλήθεια in the Gospel of John results from an experienced event. Prior to its analysis of ἀλήθεια within the Gospel, this study categorizes synchronic usages of “truth” from the ancient Mediterranean world. It then argues that the way the Gospel utilizes these prior categories reveals the specific motivations for the semantic expansion of ἀλήθεια into a Christological concept. This article considers the cognitive motivations and conditions for semantic change as outlined by linguists Blank and Coseriu
