On the margins of the Góngora polemic, Martín de Angulo y Pulgar proceeded to reclaim the poetic image of Góngora in the third decade of the seventeenth century, while preparing an edition of his poetry. For this, he used Jean de Courbes’ engraved portrait of Góngora and, as editor, included another one by himself. To complete this strategy of (self-)promotion, Angulo paid special attention to the ties between Góngora’s verses and the fine arts, above all in his poetic painting of the Polifemo and his use of the chiaroscuro, and the stylization of forms, with El Greco always in the background
