This article offers a commentary on the question of how we see the ‘Other’ and ‘Ourselves’ from a perspective within the territory of ‘Turkish Germany’. In the context of post reunification Germany, the question of European responses to the presence of migrant communities is interrogated, with reference to the deep embedding of historical stereotypes of the Other, in contemporary culture and consciousness. The inadequacy of static models of ‘civilizational conflict’ is discussed, along with the need to reject simple calls for ‘unity’, or for the disavowal of differences. The question is posed as to whether Germany can accept the German Turks, as much as they have accepted it, as a part of themselves
