This text analyzes, from a semio-pragmatic perspective, the representations of masculinity and its links with power in three Mexican films from the seventies: Los albañiles (Jorge Fons, 1976), El lugar sin límites (Arturo Ripstein, 1977) and Cadena perpetua (Arturo Ripstein, 1978). In this period, the Mexican Estate proposed a «democratic opening» while repressing dissident groups and restricting spaces for criticism. The films studied illustrate this paradox through the development of patronage ties between authority figures and male characters, ties that force men to be executors or victims of machismo and challenge the configuration of citizen masculinity. The benevolence-coercion contradiction is represented by gestures, symbols, ellipsis, lighting contrasts and the mise-en-scène
