This article looks at the medieval epic La Venjance Nostre Seigneur from the perspective of Christian apocryphal writings. Formally a chanson de geste, but extremely atypical within this corpus, this text bridges the gap between holy history and the exploits of medieval knights. This little-studied text shows how the medieval epic genre strengthened its Christian roots by freely rewriting the conquest of Judea by Titus and Vespasian, thereby providing both theological and literary justification for the Crusades
