The Messenger of Europe (Vestnik Evropy) in 1817. The bi-weekly The Messenger of Europe (Vestnik Evropy) founded in 1802 by Karamzin, who published works in verse or prose, articles in literary history or literary theory, scientific articles, history articles, partly translated from foreign sources, has the reputation of becoming «pedantic» and conservative under the direction of Mikhail Kachenovski (1805-1830). Although in 1817 the journal is still in the tradition of Russian neo-classicism of the eighteenth century (with edifying tales, translations of the classics of Greek and Roman antiquity, articles of poetic taken from Marmontel and Batteux, anecdotes), he venerates however Zhukovski, criticizes the tragedies of Ozerov and Sumarokov, opens to Hebrew literature, point out the new novels of Mme de Genlis, publish Mme de Staël, an extract of the Universal catechism of the marquis de Saint-Lambert, denounces the rigmarole of German philosophy (Kant, Schelling). In the historical field he publishes the Campaign Notes (1812) of Ivan Lazhechnikov, he is interested in relations between the State and the Catholic Church in the different European countries, wants the abolition of the black slave trade, celebrates the death of Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, appreciates the situation of France under Louis XVIII. Journal of Muscovite teachers and amateurs, Vestnik Evropy occupies a middle place between the «Ancients » and the «Moderns», between the cosmopolitism and the pre-Slavophile identity claim
