Since its creation, the CAPES de lettres modernes has required knowledge of the history of the French language. However, the exam has evolved from a full test on the history of French to a single question, with no reference to medieval texts. This evolution raises questions about the interest given to knowledge of the changes in the language over time, in the training of a french teacher. The article analyses the justifications given by the jury reports (since 2001). Initially related to the teaching of medieval literature, knowledge of the history of the language is now justified by the light it can shed on archaisms or “particularities” of contemporary French
