This article stems from the philosophy of education and training, with an intertextual and hermeneutic approach applied to a contemporary literary corpus. We are interested in the way in which something like a double focus on recent social mutations in Western societies in general and the cultures, imaginaries and trajectories of engineers within them in particular can give us food for thought on the formation of the latter and nourish a social heuristics of our time. To this end, we propose a reflexive examination of Houellebecq’s novels, through the prism of the issue of the cultures and social roles of engineers, in search of figures and situations that enable us to think about these issues (1). On this basis, we then set out some heuristic proposals regarding the experience of self-formation as an engineer in a contemporary society of individuals, and the ways in which a philosophical approach to Houellebecq’s work helps us to orient ourselves in the face of this challenge, at each pole of the pedagogical relationship (2)
