The emergence of recording technologies is considered a turning point in the historical development of the music industry. This development made it possible to transform music from a sensory form into a physical product, thereby enabling its widespread distribution and subsequent commercialization as a commodity. With increasing diversity and the rapid commercialization of the music industry, the names that characterize music have become a kind of marketing tool as music genres.Within music marketing strategies, music genres have begun to function as an important tool of the music industry, in addition to being a sociological indicator of the buyer. It has been observed that the music genres used to define music today and the market share assessments that have developed in relation to these genres have also paved the way for the formation of music genres. This study aims to examine the evolutionary process of the classification of music into genres according to specific characteristics for marketing purposes, which has become one of the most fundamental phenomena of the global music industry. In the studies conducted, music genres are a fundamental research topic in MIR studies for the development of automatic recognition, classification, and recommendation systems, and in sociological studies for topics such as cultural identity formation, community formation, and consumption practices. The fact that the industrial dimension of the subject has not been addressed makes the study valuable in this sense. In this study, which is a critical review of traditional reviews, the relevant literature was reviewed, and the situation was evaluated through the practices of the music industry as a result of the analysis of the relevant material. The study found that music genres have maintained and reinforced their position as one of the most important elements of the industry by serving as a signifier in the process of music reception by listeners
